2017 NYSSMA Solo/Ensemble Festival
What is it? The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) holds festivals all across New York State each year. Students prepare solos and small ensemble music and perform them for an adjudicator at these festivals. The adjudicators will provide valuable feedback on the students playing. When and Where? Festivals are held at different sites each year - this year, we will be attending the festival at Bethlehem Middle School on April 8th. Students will be assigned a 10-minute time slot to perform. Why? Preparing a NYSSMA solo is a unique personal and educational challenge! The feedback provided is invaluable as you continue learning your instrument. Consistent NYSSMA solo participation can be a great student resume item, and often leads to consideration for select performing ensembles such as All-County and All-State. What do I have to do?
Congratulations to the Scott M. Ellis 4th and 5th Grade Bands for an amazing Holiday Concert!
Things to know:
-Plan to arrive at Columbia HS at least 40 minutes before scheduled performance time. -Go straight to the registration table as soon as you arrive. -Use the information on the Performance Ticket to register. The people at the registration table will not know what a Performance Ticket is, but they will need that information. -Proceed to the "Brass/Woodwind/Percussion Warm-up Room" (gymnasium). -Find Mr. Clermont and obtain a second original copy of solo - students need to have 2 original copies, one to play and one for the judge. -Percussionists: Obtain Snare Drum from Mr. Clermont -Students should warm-up for 10-15 minutes prior to going to performance room. -Arrive at scheduled performance room 10 minutes before scheduled time. -Parents can listen to their students' performance from the hallway outside the classroom. Parents are welcome in the room, but it tends to help the stress level of the student to have parents listen from outside. -When performance is over, you are free to leave. I suggest going to get ice cream. -Scores will be available next week in school. Reminders: -Students should warm-up for at least 30 minutes on the day of NYSSMA. (this will not be possible for a few students) I have instructed students to play scales and easy tunes from their lesson book to warm up. -Before you leave for NYSSMA double check the following items: Your child’s instrument and supplies. (reeds, valve oil, etc.) The purchased (not photocopied) version of your solo. A "Performance Ticket" A bottle of water. Your child should dress nicely for the performance. -Remind your child to relax, have fun and showcase the great work they’ve done preparing their solo. Directions: It will take at least 45 minutes to drive to Columbia HS - this means most families will want to leave an hour and a half before their scheduled performance time.
