Practice Tips
Creating a good practice habit is the most important factor in learning to play an instrument. Please check out these tips for making the most out of your practice time.
-Practice space. Create a space that is free from distractions (i.e.: tv, computers, traffic, pets). Set up an appropriately sized chair and a music stand. Make sure there is a clock in the room to record your practice time.
-Time of day. Creating a successful practice schedule often relies on consistency. Try to practice at the same time each day on the same days of the week. This will allow for maximum consistency and will eventually turn in to a good habit.
-Warm up slowly. As you are activating the muscles that you will be using to play your instrument, pay close attention to your playing position, posture, hand position, and breathing.
-Rhythm first. Can you count the rhythm for the exercise you are playing? Can you tap the rhythms in time?
-Break the music into small pieces. Small chunk, slow down, repeat, speed up, full piece.
-Practice with a friend occasionally. This can help to make practice time fun, and you can work on tuning and blending your sounds.
